Case Study

Three years of returns that did not agree.

Transforming challenges into opportunities

Preparation looks backward, and sometimes what is back there does not line up. This case is about a current year return that could not be filed correctly until the three behind it had been read properly.

Challenge

Nina writes and performs. Her income arrives as mechanical and performance royalties, sync fees and occasional live work, reported by four payers on three different forms.

  • Royalty income reported on Schedule E in one year and Schedule C in the next two, with no change in the underlying work.
  • Sync fees received gross, with the publisher share never shown, overstating income in two of the three years.
  • Two 1099s issued to a loan out that had been dissolved, and still carried onto the personal return.
  • Foreign withholding on European performance income never claimed as a credit.

Strategic response

Preparation done properly starts with reading, not typing.

  • Income characterized consistently. Royalty income placed on one schedule with a written basis, and the prior years reconciled to match.
  • Publisher splits recorded. Sync income reported net of the share that was never hers, with the statements attached to the file.
  • The dissolved entity closed out. Final returns filed and payers corrected, so the forms stop arriving.
  • Foreign tax credits claimed. Withholding certificates gathered for the open years and claimed where the statute still allowed it.

Result

  • $34,600 refunded across two amended years. Sync income corrected to net and foreign credits claimed.
  • Current year filed on time. With the history settled, the return went out in March rather than on extension.
  • Payer records corrected. Forms now issue to the right taxpayer, which removes the problem rather than repeating the fix.
  • One treatment going forward. The same schedule on the same basis, every year.

Conclusion

Preparation is not data entry. Most of the value in this file came from reading three years that nobody had read together, and the current return took less time because of it.

Representative scenario. The figures illustrate the work rather than a named client.
